RESIDENCES DE ARTS

At the southern tip of Dakar, in the heart of the Cap Manuel peninsula, stands the Ancien Palais de Justice, former Courthouse, built in 1957 in Le Corbusier’s Brutalist style and abandoned in 1992 as a relic of the colonial era.

This project presents a twofold challenge: first, the restoration and reinterpretation of a historic building; second, the creation of an architectural landmark that will elevate the area as a new residential hub for the city, employing a dynamic and contemporary design language.

RESIDENCES DE ARTS
RESIDENCES DE ARTS

The intervention on the existing building consists of removing the least architecturally significant and most dilapidated elements (auxiliary spaces and offices) and transforming the Hall of Lost Steps and the courthouses into a contemporary art museum: the Palace of Justice is thus transformed into the Palace of the Arts (Palais des Arts).

In the available open space, the construction of a basement for parking garage (375 spaces) and five towers ranging from 7 to 20 stories high, connected by a three-story commercial base, is proposed. The three towers on the west side are designated for residential use (Résidences des Arts), while the two at the southern end are dedicated to offices and a conventions hotel (Galaxy One Bureaux).

RESIDENCES DE ARTS

PARVIS DES ARTS, A Space for Everyone

The project is located at the end of Pasteur Avenue, which, under different names, crosses the Dakar Plateau from North to South. As a meeting place and reception area, the project offers an open space, Parvis des Arts, dedicated to free creativity. This large filtering space, an intermediary between urban and artistic reality, will accommodate activities that, by their nature, cannot be included within the museum, acting as a social catalyst.

JARDIN DES SCULPTURES, Art Meets the City

A garden filled with sculptures runs through the project, literally bringing art to the street. This space serves as a manifesto of intent: the residents of the Résidences des Arts truly live surrounded by art. Art permeates daily life.

PALAIS DES ARTS, Shared Heritage

The interior of the historic building is being repurposed as a museum. The aim is to seize this opportunity to establish Dakar as a leading center for contemporary African art, incorporating a significant private collection, as well as providing spaces for training, workshops and activities.

The intervention preserves the original space, which is flexibly adapted using lightweight elements that allow for unlimited combinations, tailored to each exhibition. The existing central courtyards are landscaped to become places for relaxation and, above all, for gathering.

RÉSIDENCES DES ARTS, 360º of exceptional views

Located on the southern tip of the city, Cap Manuel, these residences will become the new iconic place to live. A commercial base supports three residential towers housing 200 exclusive apartments with exceptional views of the Atlantic Ocean. Each tower features communal spaces (pool, gym) on itermediate levels.

Apartments are available in various sizes, from studios to five-bedroom duplexes, all with large terraces that protect and extend the living space, incorporating nature. A commitment to sustainable development will guide the project, which is pursuing international certifications.

NOUVELLE VILLE DE TANAMASOANDRO

Antananarivo, the political capital of Madagascar, is experiencing rapid growth due to the combined pressures of rural exodus and population increase. Its current population is approximately four million. This situation has generated new urban problems and significant spatial and socioeconomic imbalances (inefficient urban transport, the emergence of precarious housing along canals and in rice paddies, overburdened networks, and energy deficiencies).

Antananarivo suffers from a significant housing shortage for vulnerable and middle-class populations, as well as a lack of services, infrastructure, and amenities for all its residents. Its geographical characteristics, consisting mainly of floodplains and urbanized hills, also hinder expansion in the immediate vicinity. To address this problem, the Republic of Madagascar launched a program for the creation of peripheral urban centers, of which this project is a part.

NOUVELLE VILLE DE TANAMASOANDRO
NOUVELLE VILLE DE TANAMASOANDRO

The project involves the complete construction of a new city of approximately 1,000 hectares (10 million square meters), designed for 250,000 inhabitants, on land located in Imerintsiatosika, 25 km from the city center. The site was initially occupied by NASA and later by the Malagasy army.

The new city will include a district housing the country’s main administrative buildings (National Assembly, Prime Minister’s Office, Ministries and Presidential Palace), a financial district, a commercial area, leisure parks, and educational, cultural and healthcare facilities, complementing the residential neighborhoods.

TOWARDS THE CITY OF THE FUTURE: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations.

Ecological sustainability: creating a compact city; developing a sustainable transport network; harnessing renewable energy; promoting biodiversity.

Cultural sustainability: protecting heritage; strengthening cultural values.

Social sustainability: a healthy mind in a healthy body; promoting the health of citizens; providing leisure spaces; ensuring a network of quality, mixed-use housing.

Economic sustainability: promoting quality education; supporting local agriculture; fostering an industry based on research and development; creating a vibrant business center.

NOUVELLE VILLE DE TANAMASOANDRO

THE GREAT LINEAR PARK: A GREEN RIVER

From the analysis of the city of the future, the importance of respecting local landscapes and lifestyles, as well as integrating the city with the existing ecosystem, is highlighted.

The site where the Tanamasoandro Eco-city is located is characterized by beautiful rice terraces, creating a significant physical, cultural, social, and economic landscape that urban design should enhance.

This same analysis emphasizes the need to connect with a green network that allows for smooth and non-intrusive mobility, as well as the strengthening of new lifestyles focused on health and contact with nature.

From the combination of these needs arises the guiding idea of creating a complete city around a large linear park, which replicates the scale of the surrounding area within its own system of green spaces, in harmony with the city as a whole. The “green river” linear park simultaneously provides efficient mobility and integrates the city with the landscape.

M’POUTO WATERFRONT

M’Pouto Waterfront is the new place to live in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Located on the north shore of the Ébrié lagoon, in close proximity to the Ivoire golf club, this unique residential resort will set the new standards for the area.

M’Pouto Waterfront has been conceived as a balanced combination of different types of buildings and landscapes, in order to create a resort-like atmosphere.

As residences, besides its eleven state of the art apartment buildings, M’Pouto Waterfront offers town houses, lagoon view luxury villas and “The Village”.

As amenities, M’Pouto Waterfront development includes a nine classroom school, kids’ playground, office space, a leisure pier and “The Club”, with restaurant, tennis court, gym and an outstanding swimming pool.

M’POUTO WATERFRONT
M’POUTO WATERFRONT

MASTER PLAN

The master plan has been studied to maximize the views to the lagoon. Accordingly, the apartment buildings, five and six stories, are located in the north-east and north-west sides of the development, defining its urban perimeter; “The Village”, three to five stories, stands at the center, as the heart of the residential resort; while the town houses and the villas, both two stories, enjoy the shore of the lagoon.

“The Club” and the office space are located at the north corner of the compound, by the main access, to set from the beginning its resort-like character. From there, a palm tree boulevard and a circular one-way road organize the car traffic through the development.

The pier will offer, at the same time, space for leisure and a landmark, an architectural feature that distinctly identifies m’pouto waterfront as a high-end destination.

M’POUTO WATERFRONT
M’POUTO WATERFRONT

APARTMENT BUILDINGS

Eleven buildings, rising five and six stories, offer a full range of apartments: one, two, three and four bedroom apartments, including duplexes and penthouses with private swimming pools, all following the highest standards for size and quality. The apartments are conceived to have their living areas facing the best available views, and at the same time maximize the privacy of the bedrooms.

Their architecture is born form the combination of expressive engineered-stone shells, cantilevered balconies extended with aluminium shadings to protect the floor to ceiling windows and light canopies at the top to shelter the exclusive penthouses. All intertwined with landscape features that pierce and climb through the buildings to intensify the resort-like feeling of the whole resort. All the apartments count with two parking spaces (one indoor and one outdoor).

OASIS PHARMA CENTER

In a world where life expectancy continues to rise, anti-aging pharmaceuticals have ceased to be a cosmetic luxury and have become a pillar of public health. Their goal is no longer simply to live longer, but to optimize quality of life and ensure active aging.

The master plan for Oasis Pharma Center seeks to create synergies in this field through a novel combination of components: pharmaceutical offices and laboratories, a convention center, a wellness hotel, a spa, an organic restaurant, a retail area, a medical center, apartments, and villas. Pharmaceutical research, medical application, and lifestyle are positively reinforcing each other.

OASIS PHARMA CENTER
OASIS PHARMA CENTER

WALKABILITY

The development model in much of the United States is urban sprawl, characterized by low density, segregated land use, and total dependence on the automobile. This sprawl has an impact on physical health (sedentary lifestyles, with the resulting obesity and cardiovascular diseases) and mental health (isolation), road safety, and infrastructure costs.

The master plan for Oasis Pharma Center aims to counter this model of urban sprawl by introducing the concept of walkability. The office building folds back on itself, creating an urban plaza with shops and restaurants. Cars disappear beneath this pedestrian-friendly space, freeing up the area between buildings for walking amidst the landscape.

OASIS PHARMA CENTER
OASIS PHARMA CENTER

ECOLOGICAL DRAINAGE

The layout of the buildings responds to and respects the existing perennial stream system, and complements it with a series of permanently wet retention ponds to ensure proper ecological drainage of the territory, while enriching the landscape.

OASIS PHARMA CENTER

HEALTHY AGEING VILLAGE

The greenhouse-style restaurant connects employees and visitors with organic food, creating a true culinary ecosystem. Some of the food is grown inside the restaurant or in the adjacent gardens, promoting awareness of sustainability and local sourcing.

The hotel and spa embrace the medical-wellness concept. They offer cutting-edge medicine researched at the adjacent pharmaceutical center, scientifically integrating diagnostic and therapeutic technologies (genomics, biohacking, regenerative medicine, immune system revitalization, etc.) while guests enjoy an environment of ultimate relaxation. The goal is not only the absence of disease but also achieving an optimal state of vitality.

The project also includes 136 apartments with interior gardens and 18 villas. The residential units have access to dedicated facilities (gym, social club, daycare, playground).

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

The International School is intended to have 1.000 students at the moment of its opening, and 1.700 after 3 to 5 years. In order to allow its grow in phases and flexible organization, the design will be modular, with a maximum capacity of 80 classrooms and 1.925 students. It is composed of: L’Élémentaire, for 450 students in 18 classrooms; Le Collège, for 800 students in 32 classrooms; Le Lycée, for 675 students in 30 classrooms; Boarding School dormitories, for 486 students; Arts and Culture Centre, including an amphitheatre for 300 people; Library and Documentation Centre; Sports Centre, including three sports courts, athletics track and swimming pools; School yards and landscaped areas; Students canteen and Administration offices.

The project will carefully integrate modern and sustainable design with nature and open spaces, in order to create a stimulating destination, to enhance creativity and to promote community values.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: OPENNESS

In line with CSI philosophy, the design will have openness as its motto. At every scale and at every design decision, openness will be the guide. This is the main experience that the project will promote.

Thus, in its overall arrangement, the school will be organized giving the same importance to built space and to open space. The Secondaire building, hosting Lycée and Collège will be composed as a rhythmic succession of open space and buildings, connected by an open corridor in two levels. The Primaire building will combine open and built space in a two level spiral around an stepped playground.

Accordingly, in its architectural level, natural light and big openings will define the school’s clean and modern design.

CITÉ MINISTÉRIELLE

The new city of Tanamasoandro will grow from the seed of its ministerial city. Twelve ministerial buildings, housing twenty-two ministries, create a representative axis, culminating in the Presidential Palace. The complex is completed by the Olympic Ring (Olympic and football stadium and basketball arena).

The inspiration for the master plan comes from national symbols: the Ravenala Madagascariensis (traveler’s tree), the rice stalk, the Omby (zebu), and Lamba (traditional textiles).

MINISTRIES

The ministerial buildings are organized into two wings (one ministry per wing), with shared lobby and reception areas. Access for authorities and visitors is via the façade facing the central axis, while employee access is from the parking area. The angled shape of the wings embraces a front plaza and opens onto side gardens. Each building includes offices, a restaurant, public reception areas, and an auditorium seating 220. The varying heights between the different blocks provide accessible landscaped terraces on each level.

The Presidential Palace serves as a focal point for the central axis of the Ministerial City. Its design is inspired by the head of the Omby (zebu), a symbol of power, wealth, and social status in Malagasy culture. The building’s horns, which house the workspaces and public reception areas, surround a public plaza. The building’s head, enclosed by private gardens, is the President’s residence.

FIRST IMMO TOWER
FIRST IMMO TOWER

The project is a response to a competition for the design of an office tower in the center of Antananarivo, at the intersection of the main business avenues: Rue Ravoninahitriniarivo and Rue Marais Masay.

The competition brief calls for two options. The first option consists of two towers with a ground floor plus 35 stories, with a total area of 60,000 m2. The second option is a single building with a ground floor plus 20 stories, with a total area of 32,000 m2.

ONE IDEA, TWO PROJECTS

The competition calls for two architectural proposals of different scales: two twin towers (ground floor + 35) and a single building (ground floor + 20).

The architectural design is identical: a representative building that is simultaneously elegant, modern, and iconic. The volumes must remain proportional, maintaining a slender yet rotunda-like form. The materials are contemporary and absolutely timeless to ensure a refined appearance over time, preventing the building from aging quickly.

With this same idea, the slender glass tower, the two projects are: the two towers and the twin tower.

One idea: the two, the double, the half, the duplicate, the addition, the repetition, the copy…

Two projects: the two towers vs. the twin tower.

FIRST IMMO TOWER

THE TWO TOWERS: TWO BRANCHES, ONE ROOT

The two towers rise to great heights thanks to their slender proportions, creating a play of volumes and reflections. Like the petals of a bird of paradise, they emerge vertically in a soft and elegant manner.

Even though they maintain the image of two distinct towers, the atrium is a shared space. Entry to both towers is through this double-height space. From here, visitors or employees can proceed to the stairwell of their chosen tower and ascend to their workplace or to the panoramic restaurant located on the rooftop of both towers. From the sophisticated restaurant, patrons can admire the city and the lake.

The apparently symmetrical cuts of its volumes generate completely asymmetrical angles and viewpoints, which means that the view of the two towers is never the same.

FIRST IMMO TOWER
FIRST IMMO TOWER

ELEGANCE AND TIMELESSNESS

Colored and mirrored glass creates a play of light and shadow with the sky, blending seamlessly into its surroundings. It allows for adjusting the level of transparency between the interior and exterior spaces according to programmatic requirements. The choice of materials for the two towers aims to integrate the entire complex with the landscape. The glass and mirrors create a chameleon-like effect against the Malagasy sky.

The towers’ appearance changes throughout the day. At dawn, the buildings are discreet. As night falls, they shine. Only by embracing timelessness and elegance as guiding principles is it possible to create something truly unique and exclusive. Beyond fleeting fads and trends in spectacular architecture, the two towers represent a sustainable development project. The interplay of transparencies and glass tones will allow for controlled visibility between the interior and exterior spaces.

FIRST IMMO TOWER

THE ATRIUM WELCOMES VISITORS WITH A SKIN THAT INVITES THEM TO ENTER

The volume created (ground floor and first floor) between the two towers serves as a public atrium. It functions as an entrance, lobby, reception area, and access point for the shops on the ground floor and the restaurants on the first floor.

The building’s cross-sections at the ground floor accentuate this entrance, inviting people to enter. It is the same form that marks the entrance, functioning as a welcoming arch.

The gentle and subtle gesture of the skin is that of the building embracing, the building receiving, the building expressing itself through its own architecture.

FIRST IMMO TOWER
FIRST IMMO TOWER

THE DOUBLE TOWER: A SINGLE VOLUME THAT APPEARS TWO

As if composed of two elements that call to one another, the two original towers converge until they become a single tower with a shared core. Thus, the Double Tower is born, like the inevitable union of two units. This proposal retains the initial essence: the pursuit of an elegant and timeless building.

The project makes no secret of its origins, highlighting the two original towers. The final composition is the result of this assembly, and emphasizing this in volume is an elegant and sincere gesture. Instead of conceiving this project as a massive element with less appealing proportions, the interplay of thinner, more slender, and more elegant volumes reinforces the overall image. This building is a game; it is an embrace of two towers, it is a union…

In a poetic way, one of the two towers is taller than the other. The difference is emphasized by this architectural gesture. These are two buildings; it’s a double tower.

And there you have it, the visual effect of the double tower…

FIRST IMMO TOWER
FIRST IMMO TOWER
FIRST IMMO TOWER
FIRST IMMO TOWER

THE ATRIUM. A PLAY OF SHAPES AND LIGHT

The atrium, designed as a welcoming space, must convey a pleasant and inviting image while simultaneously being perceived as an elegant and sophisticated space, in harmony with the building of which it is a part.

The idea is clear: to create a vibrant and iconic space where light and form take center stage.

The entrance area is double-height, where the retail and dining spaces on the first floor cascade down to the ground floor, creating intersecting views.

The upper canopy allows light to filter in, subtly shaping it. It acts as a filter, controlling the sun’s rays and creating a play of light that changes throughout the day.

The staircase forms an asymmetrical sculpture that surprises visitors, presenting itself as a path leading to the first floor. The darker color reinforces the contrast with the rest of the space, giving it its own distinct character. The reception area, far from being considered a secondary space, is very prominent and has a central location, blending in with the sculpture of the staircase.

OTIUM ET NEGOTIUM (LEISURE AND BUSINESS)

The society of our time is characterized by its capacity to generate increasing leisure needs for all socioeconomic classes. The ancient concept of leisure (otium), meaning the withdrawing from business (negotium), that was passive and reserved for wealthy people, has been gradually surpassed by a new concept -the modern leisure-, that is family and activity oriented and open to the middle classes. Again, what once was considered superfluous -the unimportant leisure time compared to the important business time-, now is essential and, ironically, a big business opportunity. While the traditional economy shows signs of exhaustion, businesses based on second generation needs, as leisure, still have a long way to go.

ADRIATIC SEAFRONT

THE SUPERFLUOUS, A VERY NECESSARY THING

The architecture and urbanism of our time is characterized by oversized residential and commercial developments, which generate around them big spaces devoted to leisure, both passive and active. According to our experience, architects leading those projects tend to focus their efforts in the main buildings, and they disregard the design of the unbuilt spaces, like gardens or parks, and of the ancillary architectures that they host. Nevertheless, in our opinion, that what sometimes is considered superfluous -here, the unbuilt space- is the most indispensable thing.

ADRIATIC SEAFRONT
ADRIATIC SEAFRONT

It is what adds life to a project and qualifies the architectural experience with nuances. Thus, rather than being neglected, these spaces should be given relevance from the outset and be designed in a way that adds value already in the master plan stage, combining both the creativity that triggers attraction and the realism that makes them feasible. To generate spaces of high well-being, it is necessary the symbiosis between landscape and architectural design in a real global project capable of generating new expectations and of meeting them. Both a landscaped architecture and an architectural landscape are needed.

DIAMNIADIO LEISURE PARK

Diamniadio is Senegal’s ambitious new city, designed to alleviate congestion in Dakar and become the economic engine of West Africa. Located 30 km from the capital, it represents the crown jewel of the Emerging Senegal Plan. The city stands out for its futuristic architecture and strategic connectivity. Linked by the Regional Express Train (TER) and a toll highway that reduces the journey to Dakar to just 20 minutes, it boasts administrative buildings (Ministries, United Nations House), elite sports facilities (Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, Dakar Arena), business centers, international events (Abdou Diouf International Conference Center, CICAD), and technology hubs (Digital Technology Park, City of Knowledge).

DIAMPARC

“Experience the fun of nature and the magic of adventure in our wonderful Leisure Park”

Besides its economic interest, nobody doubts that quality leisure is of paramount importance for the healthy development of both individuals and society. And specially, the possibility of the whole family sharing spaces for leisure favors autonomy, self-esteem and building positive values. Accordingly, Leisure Parks are experiencing high growth and popularity levels. Wisely, the master plan for Diamniadio includes an space reserved for a 10 hectares Leisure Park.

DIAMPARC

According to the Request for Proposal, “the concept of the project wants to define large areas with bright spaces, natural elements and vegetation that create peaceful environments and walkways. The project shall be organized around open streets, squares with terraces and a leisure space, in order to get the expected concept design. The intention is to attract the crowds, Park redouble in imagination and strike hard! The new trend is to bet on thrills”.

Once the need for leisure spaces has been understood, it is very important to develop a realistic project that is:

– Guest experience driven

– Family oriented

– Activity driven

DIAMPARC

GUEST EXPERIENCE DRIVEN

Traditional categories that describe conventional architecture – stability, utility and beauty ( firmitas, utilitas, venustas )- are not enough to explain leisure projects, and new categories must be added: novelty, interesting, surprising, exciting… In short, categories that move away from the architectural object and are centered in customer’s active experience.

Our aim is not only producing square meters of buildings and parks complying with economical and functional requirements, but also, above all, designing experiences. In our vision, a building or environment that does not provoke an experience, that leaves you indifferent, is a failed project.

DIAMPARC

In principle, the target population is limited in number. Therefore, the business is feasible and success possible only if the facility is capable of generating repetition among its customers by taking care of guest experience. That means exceeding guest’s expectations about quality of services and experiences.

At the same time, repetition should be based on the sense of belonging and community, so the Leisure Park becomes a meeting point for friends and relatives. Accordingly, it is important, besides having attractions for big groups, to allow for spaces to hold private parties (birthday parties and the like) and for teaming up activities.

In urban areas, Nature and Sustainability also enhance guest experience and sense of belonging. Hence, Diamniadio Leisure Park should become a reference for natural life lovers.

DIAMPARC

FAMILY ORIENTED

The target population is composed of families with children of various ages. Therefore, to be able to bring enough customers to ensure feasibility, Diamniadio Leisure Park should have as a target all age groups and provide attractions for all them, taking into account their different needs:

– Children from 0 to 6 years old

– Children from 6 to 12 years old

– Teenagers

– Adults

This design criteria should be repeated at every zone of the Park, adding children scale versions of every attraction or activity, in protected areas for kids to enjoy.

Including the possibility of whole-family dining enhances the experience and improves repetition rates, as well as it raises expenditure levels by prolonging the stay.

DIAMPARC

ACTIVITY DRIVEN

To improve repetition ratios, when choosing anchor attractions, priority should be given to those requiring physical activity and allowing competition and continuous improvement by training the abilities that are needed. In that way, attractions become addictive in the positive sense. In our time, when kids own an iPad, physical activity is more profitable than electronic games.

As the the Leisure Park targets to a wide range of people, it should offer different alternatives for different activity levels:

– Walk and relax

– Family fun

– Adrenaline activities

As with age groups, this design criteria should be repeated at every zone of the Park, creating different activity level areas when possible.

Outdoor spaces—including the parking area, terrace, and swimming pool—are designed to create a seamless transition between common areas and the landscape. With 82 rooms and a built area of 5,200 m², the complex addresses both the functional needs of the hospitality sector and technical requirements regarding comfort and efficient spatial layout in the city of Bouaké.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

The new footbridge at the mouth of the Cervol River will occupy a prime scenic location, situated where the river meets the sea and serving as a link between Fora-Fora Park and a new park to the north of the river. Its relationship with the surroundings aims to provide continuity for the seafront promenade on both sides of the river and for the network of pedestrian and cycle paths.

On the south side, the footbridge connects seamlessly with the promenade, ensuring absolute continuity; the starting point is integrated with the river’s parapets by aligning the beginning of the bridge with the inner face of the wall. The footbridge features a reddish surface—matching the existing promenade paving—thereby creating a transition toward the park, which also employs a similar paving system.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

The footbridge consists of a 58-meter-long precast concrete unit designed as a monolithic U-shaped or trough-like element, featuring two side trusses of variable depth and a 5-meter-wide horizontal walking deck positioned at the level of the bottom chord. The structure is made of very high-performance concrete (known as UHPC), a material with excellent durability properties that has already been successfully used in similar precast footbridges.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Using a prefabricated solution of this type ensures high durability and operational functionality throughout the structure’s service life with minimal maintenance, even given its location in a humid, seaside environment. Thanks to its high strength, UHPC allows for the use of slender sections—more typical of steel structures—while offering the added value of concrete’s inherent durability. Furthermore, as a prefabricated element, it enables compliance with the project tender’s strict scheduling requirements.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

The footbridge is composed of few elements, maximizing the potential of UHPC as both a structural and a finishing component. Secondary elements made of other materials include a metal handrail with integrated lighting and a colored laminated glass barrier for safety.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

The new footbridge will mark a milestone for the city of Vinaròs; consequently, the design aims for an appropriate aesthetic resolution featuring fluid, slender lines that do not disrupt the landscape but rather add value to it. From within, the structure frames the views and transforms the crossing into an experience, while its unique geometry lends character to the surrounding area.

A structural typology was selected to maximize the clearance beneath the deck, ensuring a minimal structural profile while maintaining level access from the Fora-Forat promenade.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Continuing the straight alignment of the footbridge and the Fora del Forat promenade, the new park serves as a connecting node for the various routes converging in this area.

The primary design premise is the extension of the Fora del Forat promenade, ensuring continuity with the footbridge’s alignment. A diagonal cycle-pedestrian path branches off this main promenade, cutting across the park to connect with a perimeter path running alongside the Boverals Street project.

VINAROZ PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

The park accommodates the northern landing of the footbridge and is organized into a series of bands perpendicular to the coastline; these blend into the existing landscape and blur the promenade’s original paving lines. Along the Fora Forat promenade, the design accounts for the existing roadway bike lane, extending its continuity across the footbridge and into the park. The continuity of the coastal promenade is further enhanced by recreating a Mediterranean woodland alongside the walkway, linking it to the dune restoration planned for the Calle Doncella project.

Bands of varying vegetation and materials create a transition from the urban to the natural, with specific designated uses. The narrower bands are generally dedicated to shrubbery, except where a natural WPC wood pathway cuts across the park, connecting the beach to the area north of the site. The wider bands contain what are termed “landscape rooms”—some featuring specific amenities and facilities, others planted with Mediterranean vegetation in single-species clusters.

BUILDING BRIDGES

In the past, the lower stretch of the Miño River served as a border—a dividing element. This is evidenced by the defensive structures clearly visible on both sides of this natural boundary.

These are robust, enclosed structures, anchored to the very territory they were built to defend.

Today, the river has become a meeting point and an asset of immense scenic and environmental value. Its banks are home to leisure and cultural spaces. They are parks and beaches that open up to the surrounding vistas.

This historic and social transformation is particularly evident at the “A Barca” crossing, one of the narrowest points of the Lower Miño. At the foot of the old San Lourenzo Fortress, one now finds the Espazo Fortaleza Park and the Goián river beach; directly opposite, next to the former Vila Nova de Cerveira Fortress, lies the O Castelinho Park.

In the near future, the European process of bridging borders at this location will involve physically linking these two public leisure areas to create the Castelinho-Fortaleza Cross-Border Park—thereby fostering a synergistic connection between the urban centers of Goián and Vila Nova.

Footbridge over Miño River

If the river acts as an element of separation (historically) and of encounter (today), the object that will stitch them together is a bridge.

WEAVING THE MIÑO

The Miño River is the central element of the Castelinho-Fortaleza Park.

As a river, it represents a physical separation; as a landscape feature, it serves as a meeting point.

Therefore, the planned pedestrian and bicycle bridge must simultaneously stitch the two banks together—both physically and symbolically—while enhancing the visual and environmental value of the surroundings.

In other words, the act of crossing the longitudinal physical boundary formed by the river should not create a transverse visual barrier that divides the landscape.

For this reason, among the technically and economically viable design options, priority will be given to the one that combines minimal visual impact with significant symbolic resonance, while also entailing the least environmental impact during construction.
